When EGGER’s Hexham site needed to remove a press line to reconfigure its production space, it was vital that the adjacent machinery was protected from dust.
With airborne dust and debris from the construction works posing a costly risk to ongoing production, EGGER turned to Westgate Global to design and install a temporary dust containment solution. The solution went up quickly, maintained a 99% dust-proof seal, and was fitted around the tight realities of an active production site.
The EGGER Group is a leading international wood-based materials manufacturer with 22 production plants worldwide. The company’s UK site, based in Hexham, processes roughly 700,000 cubic metres of wood annually and is responsible for creating approximately 50% of the UK’s chipboard. To meet these volumes, EGGER continuously invests in the manufacturing plant, refining processes, adding capacity, and adapting the site to meet evolving needs.
In 2016, EGGER needed to reconfigure the space by removing one of the press lines. However, with sensitive machinery operating nearby, it was vital that the team could manage and contain dust and debris from the works. Having worked together previously, EGGER turned to Westgate Global to install a temporary dust screen, quickly and without disruption to operations.
The machinery operating adjacent to the line was highly vulnerable to airborne contamination while the press line removal was underway. In addition to the potential for dust to cause visible defects, texture inconsistencies, or weak spots on the wood products themselves, dust ingress also risked impacting the machinery’s calibration or causing premature wear on conveyors, rollers, and bearings. Given that the demolition of the press line would inevitably cause substantial dust, relying on extraction alone wouldn’t have been reliable enough. A physical screen was needed to fully isolate the two work areas and protect both product quality and operational continuity on the machine that remained running.
Westgate Global recommended and designed a Flexiscreen solution, a suspended, modular panel system that offers a dust-tight seal. The solution was suspended from the building’s existing structure and tensioned to the floor, with no need for bulky or expensive steelworks or scaffolding – making it a good fit both for the space available and the budget. The design, which uses a V-overlap between panels, provided EGGER with a 99% dust-proof seal between the line-removal works and the business-critical machinery.
The completed installation was 40m in width and 8m in height, with doors added to ensure safe access for people and machinery. The tensioned fabric design meant that the screen could be fitted around building protrusions, keeping the dust-tight seal intact even around pipework and machinery.
Installation took only three and a half days, demonstrating the speed at which Westgate can install dust-containment screens, especially when a quick solution is essential to the continued operation of a business.
