Solving a critical fit-out challenge at Edmonton EcoPark
When cladding design delays threatened to stall the interior fit-out of a new administration block at a major infrastructure project at Edmonton EcoPark, lead contractor ACCIONA needed a weathertight temporary solution, fast.
Since opening in 1971, the EcoPark has diverted 21 million tonnes of rubbish from landfill. Today, it sits at the heart of North London Waste Authority’s (NLWA) £1.2 billion redevelopment programme, which includes building the greenest Energy Recovery Facility in the country. ACCIONA began construction in 2022, with commissioning targeted for around 2029, making every milestone critical.
Delays to the cladding design meant the permanent facade of the EcoPark’s new administration block could not be installed on schedule. With project milestones critical to meeting the commissioning date, ACCIONA needed to press ahead with the interior fit-out. Without a weathertight envelope, internal works could not safely proceed.
The solution needed to cover three storeys, withstand the conditions of a large active construction site, and remain in place for up to 12 months until the permanent cladding was ready. It also had to meet stringent health and safety requirements, including avoiding hot works and minimising disruption to the fit-out programme. The shrink wrap used elsewhere on site couldn’t meet these requirements, and the scaffolding required would have taken up valuable floor space, preventing fit-out works from proceeding.
