Solving the dust challenge of phased data centre handover

When a leading global data centre provider needed earlier access to completed space, Winthrop Technologies faced a challenge common to phased hyperscale builds: how to keep construction moving on unfinished areas without putting commissioned data halls at risk of contamination.

Working with long-term partner Westgate Global, the team engineered a bespoke, floor-to-ceiling dust containment solution that allowed data hall commissioning to go ahead while construction continued nearby.

Protecting live data halls from dust during phased construction

As a dedicated data centre delivery partner providing turnkey design, construction and commissioning services, Winthrop Technologies is currently delivering multiple projects across seven European countries, totalling over 430MW of IT load in-flight. On a project for one of the world’s largest global data centre providers, the team needed to phase the build to enable earlier client handover; commissioning completed halls while construction continued on adjacent phases of the same building.

As highly sensitive environments, even small amounts of airborne dust can compromise data centre cooling systems, damage sensitive equipment and breach the strict cleanliness standards required as part of data hall commissioning. With the commissioned space sitting directly alongside active construction, Winthrop needed a way to physically and environmentally segregate the two zones—allowing the build to continue without delaying commissioning or putting the server halls at risk.

Earlier in the build, Winthrop had turned to Westgate Global to supply a weatherproof screening solution which would allow the internal fit-out to begin without waiting for the external facade to be completed. Having seen the success of the bespoke Flexiwall solution, along with the design, engineering support and installation that came with it, Winthrop approached the Westgate Global team to create a bespoke dust-containment solution.

Reusable dust containment solution for live construction environments

Drawing on decades of experience delivering live-site protection in complex, mission-critical environments, the Westgate Global team worked collaboratively with Winthrop’s project team to fully understand the site conditions and operational constraints before proposing a solution. Rather than using a standard off-the-shelf product, the team engineered a bespoke design that would create a reliable dust barrier between commissioned and live-construction areas.

Constructed from the company’s tried-and-tested Hoardfast solution, the team designed and constructed three separate dust protection bubbles. Installed floor-to-ceiling, interlocking Hoardfast PVC panels and access doors were used to create dust-tight temporary airlock zones, helping Winthrop continue construction while protecting commissioned data centre areas from dust transfer. The bright-white PVC panels were quick to install, saving valuable site set-up time and minimising disruption to surrounding construction activity.

Manufactured from 85% recycled material, the dust-bubble reduces the embodied environmental impact of the temporary works compared with single-use alternatives. Its reusable, relocatable design means it can be redeployed on future phases or projects rather than discarded, supporting Winthrop’s commitment to reducing whole-life costs and environmental impact. The ability to recycle the Hoardfast panels at end-of-life also ensures the solution leaves no lasting waste footprint.

The success of the dust containment solution reflects the strength of the ongoing partnership between Winthrop Technologies and Westgate Global. Working together, the two teams were able to protect the commissioned spaces while keeping the wider construction programme firmly on schedule.
