Hoardfast Firescreen for refurb works
Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport is currently undergoing expansion, and Westgate Global were thrilled to be part of the project.
Manchester Airport is currently undergoing a 10 year, £1bn investment plan, referred to as the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme, which includes the design and construction of an extension to the existing Terminal 2 building, more than doubling its current size. Other parts of the overall project include a new 3,800 space multi-storey car park, and significant upgrades to the airport’s landscaping and road infrastructure.
Westgate Global were required to help deliver the design, supply and installation of a temporary corridor on two levels, which would link a new pier to the existing terminal whilst the terminal extension was still being fitted out. Having previously worked with Manchester Airport, Westgate Global were chosen as a reliable company who could deliver on the bespoke requirements of this project.
Due to the corridor passing through a site of around 1500 construction workers, it needed to be wind load, crowd load and 60 minute fire rated. Following close consultation with MAG security and their security consultants, a number of additional security modifications were installed and the product was approved for use as a temporary boundary. Additionally because passengers would be using the corridor over a 12 month period, it needed to look, feel and act like a permanent fixture to ensure Manchester Airport retained its high level of passenger experience.
Westgate Global provided Hoardfast Firescreen, which is a fire resistant internal hoarding panel adhering to the EN 13501-2:2008 (Surpasses Class 0) European standard. Panels are 80mm thick, white, steel faced with a mineral wool filling. Working closely with the customer and their various consultants and designers, Westgate Global came up with a bespoke fixing method to satisfy the specific requirements of the project.
The Hoardfast Firescreen panels were installed to 4.2m high, with specialist fixing angles and steel cover plates for additional protection. Due to how highly regulated the project was, Westgate Global were subject to inspections throughout, to ensure quality and security was maintained.
